Saving Primates Lecture

Robin Huffman --Art.jpg

On Monday evening at 7:30 p.m., in the Gathering Room, our speaker Robin Huffman, who was a corporate interior designer for 29 years before giving it all up to become a primate caregiver at sanctuaries in Africa and the U.S., will tell us about her efforts to save primates.

She has raised dozens of monkeys and cared for gorillas and chimpanzees, orphans due to wildlife hunting, the pet trade and research. In the process she uncovered a talent for painting the portraits of those she cared for, even though she had never had formal training in painting.

Robin paints to tell the stories of these innocent, sentient beings. In 2017 her solo exhibition “Witness” was the first art exhibit in the history of the Explorer’s Club. Her painting of Sunshine, the olive baboon she raised in 2013, still lives on the stairway of the Club, showing people the way to the second floor.

Robin will share stories, images, voices, and her intimate knowledge of these wild primates he has raised, along with the art they inspired. She will also bring some examples of her portraits.
