KoH Residents Art Committee, 2016-18
The Art Room is a place where creativity happens at Kendal
The Committee’s varied programs are open to all residents whether experienced or novice, and just curious, to experiment and explore different art forms: painting in oils, acrylics, or watercolor, or collage.
The Committee meets once a month on the second Thursday in the Art Room on C level just before the bridge to Robert Fulton.
A lot happens in the Art Room:
We organize two ART SHOWS a year on The Rue des Artistes on a chosen theme, exhibiting work done by residents and staff. It is exciting and much anticipated to be exposed to the varied talents of the Kendal community.
OPEN STUDIO is held on Saturday mornings from 10 to 12. All are invited to visit, join in and see us in action. Attendees work independently in a variety of media under the guidance of a talented resident artist. Collages, paintings, drawings, even jewelry-making happens there.
CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS: Paul Jeffries, a professional artist and sculptor, teaches many techniques in classes of 6 weeks each fall and spring to an enthusiastic following. A moderate fee is charged each participant.
Varied workshops are also conducted by members and outside artists. In April, Pam Dietrich got us started with ink drawing using feathers, sticks, Asian Brushes. In May, Alice Harrison got us producing accordion books. Suggestions of other workshops were distributed for committee members to vote on for this fall and 2018.
ART CRITIQUES, also known as "Show and Tell,” take place once a month. This is an excellent way to learn and grow as artists. Participants in each critique give constructive feedback on the work of the other members of the group.
NOTE CARDS: Some members meet Saturday mornings in the late fall to paint colorful note cards that are sold in time for the holidays.
IMPROVEMENTS AND UPGRADES: A ceiling fan was installed in the art room by the Administration to enable using oil paints and to avoid their dangerous fumes. New lighting was installed on the Rue des Artistes in early 2017.
To conclude – our Art Committee is an active one that enriches us and life at Kendal.
The Committee rents shelves to resident artists who use the room to keep their supplies.
