Besides the Trips organized by the Residents Association Trips Committee, residents travel around the region using Kendal buses, trains, local buses, cabs, car services, and private cars.
Kendal Vans and Bus
Kendal offers residents transportation for medical appointments, shopping, and similar activities. Residents sign up at the front desk. There are two vans and two buses that accommodate 12 persons in regular seats and two wheelchairs. Kendal drivers can take residents to medical appointments within a fifteen (15) mile radius of Kendal on Hudson. Sign up at least one day before an appointment in the "Local Stops and Medical Appointments" notebook at the front desk. The driver will call to confirm departure time and destination the day before. It's essential to be on time for the scheduled departure from Kendal as the driver may need to leave without you if you are late. When your medical appointment is finished and you are ready to leave the building, call the front desk (914-922-1000) to tell the receptionist you are ready for pickup. She will contact the driver.
The Kendal drivers schedule multiple shopping trips per week. Sign up at least one day before the desired trip in the Notebook at the Front Desk labeled "Local Stops, Train Station, Shopping." The driver will call to confirm departure time and destination the day before.
Metro-North Railroad Trains
Some residents regularly take Metro-North Railroad's Hudson Line trains to see friends, NYC museums, plays, concerts, restaurants, doctors, dentists, shopping, or other things, often aided by the Kendal van which takes them to a morning train and meets an afternoon train in Tarrytown whenever possible. Sign up at least one day ahead in the Notebook at the Front Desk labeled "Local Stops, Train Station, Shopping." When returning to Tarrytown call the front desk reception (914-922-1000) to confirm what train you're returning on. The last Kendal pickup is 4:30 pm. Cabs are always available at the Tarrytown Station if needed.
Senior tickets cost $7 per ride, except on trains arriving in NYC before 10 am which cost $14. Click here for the Metro-North Railroad Website showing train times. The rail road station in Tarrytown sells both train tickets and Metro cards.
Click here for MetroCard information or call (718) 330-1234. MetroCards can be used on NYC buses and subways as well as on the Westchester bus system. Persons 65 and over or those with a qualifying disability can obtain a reduced fare metro card. Click here to apply for one.
Some residents use the Westchester bus system. The #13 Beeline buses run back and forth between Ossining, Phelps Hospital, Tarrytown train station, White Plains, and Portchester Train Station. They accept MetroCards or exact change for the fare, which is $1.35 for senior citizens. Click here for a link to the Westchester bus schedules and system.
Some residents at Kendal may qualify for and benefit from the service provided by ParaTransit, operated by the Westchester Bee-Line. You must apply in writing, make a strong case for your need for the service, and, for $5.00 (one-way) you can go anywhere in Westchester County, to your doctor, a movie, shopping, a friend, a relative - anywhere in Westchester County. For applications go to the Resident Care Center and speak to Patty Munson, or call resident Juanita Carmi for more information.
Taxis and Car Services
