Kendal and Pace University Cooperate

Wellness.jpg

Kendal on Hudson is fortunate to be working with three vibrant Pace University interns from the Health Policy and Advocacy program through the Spring of 2019.

Catherine Kennedy, Denise Parra and John Arias are all Seniors who are on track to an accelerated nursing program.

Their undergraduate program aligns well with Kendal on Hudson’s emphasis on wellness and advocacy for optimal healthy living. To fulfill their 120-hour internship requirements, they are interviewing residents throughout Kendal to learn what it means to reside in the KOH community and how each resident choses to engage in meaningful activity and wellness practices. They are utilizing tools of the Vitalize 360 program to guide their interviews.

If you are interested in meeting these ambitious young people and in contributing to their educational endeavors, please reach out to Lisa Wacht, our Health Services Administrator by phone.

Nancy Gibbs to Speak

Nancy Gibbs.jpg

Nancy Gibbs, daughter of Kendal’s own Janet Gibbs, returns to Kendal for a special lecture “Trust, Tribes and Trauma: How Democracy Broke” at 7:30 pm, Friday, November 9.

From 2013-2017, Gibbs was Managing Editor, then Editor in Chief of TIME. Currently, she is the Edward R. Murrow Visiting Professor at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She is a frequent guest on radio and television current affairs shows, a former consultant to CBS News and guest essayist for The News Hour on PBS. She is co-author of two best-selling presidential histories and has lectured extensively on the American presidency.

Because of the expected large attendance, the program will be broadcast live into the PDR.

New Trip Announced

Neue Galerie.jpg

The ever-working, ever-hustling Trips Committee recently announced a new excursion, this one to the Neue Galerie, New York. The group will explore two exhibitions from the early 20th century: “Franz Marc and August Macke, 1909-1914,” 70 paintings and works on paper by two German painters who were good friends, who with Kandinsky founded Die Blaue Reiter (the Blue Rider) group of German Expressionists, and who died young in World War I; and “Weiner Werkstätte Jewelry” (Vienna Workshops Jewelry),” rare miniature jeweled treasures by leading artists like Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser.

They also announced that there are short wait lists for the Nov. 28 trip to the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers and the Nov. 14 “Do Your Own Thing” trip to the Met Museum.

Sign -up sheets are in the Trips Book in the Activities Alcove.

Dance Music Concert

Dolce Quartet.jpg

No! No! No! This is not the twist, the shuggy boogie or even the fox trot.

On Sunday afternoon, Novemeber 4 the Dolce Ensemble makes its Kendal debut with a program of lively classical dance music by DeJonghe, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Stravinski and Prokofiev.

This string quartet has enjoyed great success throughout the U.S. and, indeed, much of the rest of the world. We would not advise your bringing your dancing shoes but you should be ready to hear some classical music that even Gene Kelly would enjoy.

Gardening Enthusiasts

Community Garden.png

Here’s a chance to make Kendal on Hudson more beautiful. Listen up!

Kendal’s gardening space at present is limited to ten concrete planters on the terrace. We have an opportunity to establish a community garden in a sunny space at the south end of the Kendal campus, a short walk from the cul-de-sac.

For those unfamiliar with the concept, a community garden consists of a fenced-in area divided into conveniently sized, easy to manage plots, about 10 X 10 or 10 X 12 feet. There one can grow flowers, vegetables, herbs, and many other things.

Anyone interested please contact Peter Limburg.

New Trip

New Year's Eve at Kendal

New Year's Eve1.jpg

It’s hard to believe that New Year’s Eve is only two months away.

Sally Costa, our party coordinator, says that we have to get busy planning for the gala party following the spectacular show. She asks residents the following:

1. Would you be interested in joining the party planning group? It involves only two or three meetings.

2. Are you interested in the decorating of the residents' lounge? This requires being available on the day of the party.

3. Do you enjoy keeping the wine flowing and the tables looking good? Obviously during the celebration.

4. All of the above????

If your answer is yes and you want to have fun getting involved, get in touch directly with Sally.

Kendal's Halloween Tradition

Halloween parade.png

On Saturday, October 27, at 10:00 a.m. thirty small Sleepy Hollow children arrived at the Kendal Library in their Halloween costumes with a parent.

They came to hear Harriet Barnett read wonderful Halloween stories in Spanish! Everybody had a good time , and then they paraded down the hall to the Private Dining Room for cookies and milk plus a round of singing. Many stopped by the Library or the PDR Saturday morning to enjoy our youngest visitors.
