Great Lecture - Fascinating Story

Kendal has a fascinating lecture scheduled for Monday, October 8 at 7:30 pm in the Gathering Room. The subject is….

Refuge in Hell: Finding God in Sing Sing

This is the story of an unusual parish – drawn from the inmates of Sing Sing Prison — as told by their chaplain of 16 years, Rev. Ronald D. Lemmert.  (Father Lemmert has been offering weekly Mass for Kendal residents for several years.)

Unsparing in his treatment of the brutalities of prison life, Father Lemmert chronicles the stories of the prisoners he served, revealing their humanity, and showing that there is no place so dark that God’s love cannot be found.

His ministry began with the project of rebuilding the long-neglected prison chapel.  By enlisting the prisoners’ help, they were also gradually transformed.  Refuge in Hell describes how a caring community can emerge, as the practice of faith leads to deeper lessons in forgiveness, reconciliation, and liberation.

Copies of his book will be available for purchase at $22 each.

Some Activities at Kendal

Activities1.png

Never let it be said that there weren’t enough activities at Kendal to keep residents busy for as long as they want to be busy (and productive).

Kendal residents have a great choice when it comes to things to do. In terms of active committees we have the following:

Advocacy, Art, Audio-Visual, Bell Ringers, Chorus, CAFA (Common Space Art), Computer, Co-Pilot, Dining Advisory, Fiber Arts, Education, Heath & Wellness, Horticulture, Kendal Swap, Kendal View (our magazine), KoH TV Channel 1970 (our in-house TV Channel), Library, Loss, Movies, Music, Recycling, Residents Website, Social Events, Spotlight (weekly newsletter), Transportation Advisory, Trips, and Welcoming Team.

If that won’t keep one busy, we also have “Interest Groups”. They are:

Bridge, Chess, Faith Group, French Conversation, Italian Conversation, Great Books, Mahjong, Meditation Group, Ping-Pong, Poetry Reading, Poetry Writing, Shakespeare, Spanish Class, Tennis, Tuesday Morning Club.

The lists are pretty comprehensive. However, if a new activity is suggested, the Residents Association is usually delighted to add it to the existing list with the suggesting individual as chairperson. Anyone want to propose skydiving?

Ping-Pong Lessons Every Friday

Ping Pong4.jpg

Lesson time has been expanded due to increased demand from KoH’s growing roster of ping-pong players.

The pro for the Westchester Table Tennis Association (in Pleasantville) now gives half-hour or full-hour lessons from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Friday in our Hudson Room (located on the Terrace level, opposite the door leading to the cul-de-sac).

For information about lessons, which serve residents from beginners to “champions,” contact Muriel Fox. Residents wishing to use ping-pong facilities can sign up on the calendar in the Hudson Room.  Equipment is offered free of charge.  (Grandchildren welcome.)

Kendal Chess Club

Did you know that Kendal has a chess club?

It began about four years ago and meets every Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Residents—even those who haven’t played chess for years and feel rusty—are welcome.  Several chess sets are on hand.  Feel free to join us if you’d like to try your hand and brain at this fascinating game!

Fascinating Lecture: Megawatts and Magnanimity: A Sociologist Visits Iceland

Iceland.png

Resident Caroline Persell has always wanted to see the Northern Lights, so last March from the 15th through the 19th, when her alma mater Swarthmore College sponsored a short trip to Iceland, she and her sister decided to go.  When they arrived, they learned it had been cloudy every night for two months, so they might not see any Northern Lights!  However, they ended up finding the country fascinating geologically, socially, and artistically.

After the first two days, they felt like they had been there two weeks because they packed so much in and had such good guides, as well as a college faculty member who lectured on the sources of the Northern Lights.  In her October l talk and slide show, Caroline will share some of what she saw and learned about Iceland’s vibrant geology, history, society, and arts from the visit and relevant readings.

Caroline Hodges Persell is professor emerita of sociology at NYU.  She received her B.A. in English literature from Swarthmore College and an M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from Columbia University.

Caroline’s presentation will be held in the Gathering Room, Monday, Oct. 1 at 7:30 pm

Coffee Klatch

Coffee Klatch2.jpg

Please note the change of meeting place of Coffee Klatch on Wednesday, September 26.  Coffee Klatch will meet at 10:00 am in the Private Dining Room.

Coffee Klatch  is an informal meeting with Chris Appel, Director of Nursing and/or Lisa Wacht, Health Services Administrator. Refreshments are served, and we get to know each other better. Residents have a chance to raise concerns related to health care and they inform us what they may currently be working on.

All are welcome.
