Tour Sleepy Hollow with the Mayor

Ken Wray.jpg

Here’s a rare opportunity to get an inside look look at the village in which we live from they guy who knows the most about it - our Mayor.

On Wednesday, October 10 the Trips Committee will sponsor a tour of Sleepy Hollow with Mayor Ken Wray. This excursion will give participants greater familiarity with the neighborhoods, downtown, and the former G.M. site which is being transformed.

Mayor Wray will talk about the Village demography , the progress of the large developments projects and their long-range implications.

An optional luncheon with the Mayor is also planned.

Sign-up, as usual, is in the Activities Alcove.

Sleepy Hollow Comprehensive Plan

Sleepy Hollow3.jpg

Sometimes those of us who live in Kendal forget that we also live in the Village of Sleepy Hollow and are an integral part it.

At the moment the Village is going through a long-term planning process establishing a Comprehensive Plan. If you want to know about it (and you should) you can (should) attend a meeting to discuss it on Friday, Sept. 28, from 10-11:30 am in the Private Dining Room.

Bring your best ideas on ways to make our village more livable, more economically viable, and more welcoming for all residents, visitors, business owners and employees. Limited to 24. Sign up in Activities Alcove

Please put the date on your calendar. Questions? Contact Martin Smolin.

Needed: An Upright Piano

Upright piano.jpg

Lila d'Adolf wants to know if anyone has an upright piano they would like to contribute to Kendal so she can continue to play for the residents in Clearwater, Kendal's Skilled Nursing Unit.

Lila plays there every other week and specializes in old-time songs which the residents respond to as they can. These sessions are so important and welcomed that even those who can no longer talk try to join in. It is heartwarming to see and hear it.

If you have a piano that is just taking up space, please contact Lila who would be happy to come and play the instrument and measure it to see if it fits.

Kendal Chorus Resumes

Chorus.png

The Kendal Chorus is, once again, looking for those who like to sing. Even if your best arias have been delivered in the shower, you should try to lend your talents to this group.

The Chorus performs twice a year-- January and May-- and since the repertoire is varied and geared to the level of the participants, you will fit right in. There are no auditions, just a willingness to learn and a commitment to sing are required.

Two open rehearsals are planned on Thursdays Sept. 13 and Sept. 20 at 1:30 pm.

Aside from a small charge of $10 for the music, the only obligation is to show up regularly.

Try it! You'll love it!

Questions? Speak to Bob Singleton or Doris Appleby.

Fiber Arts Group

Fiber Art.jpg

Kendal's Fiber Arts Group will resume meeting on Friday, September 14 from 2:00pm - 4:00 pm in the Craft Room.

Meetings regularly are on the second and fourth Fridays of the month. All residents who are devotees of anything related to Fiber Arts can come and join in. The group is always looking for knitters to make the infant hats which are donated to the Open Door Clinic. Instructions, yarns and needles can be provided, and the hats can be done in one's spare time if the resident can’t attend the meetings.

Questions? Speak to Marilyn Bottjer.

Great Books Discussions

Great Books1.jpg

Another GREAT BOOKS DISCUSSIONS program is about to get underway in October and December.

From 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 (in RAO) or 18 (ACR), the group will delve into Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels (1726), and on Dec. 12 or 13 (in RAO), Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884).

Gulliver’s Travels, written by a skilled satirist, is both a rip-roaring fantasy and a searing attack on the nature of society, while Huck Finn is one of the great – if not the greatest – American novel.

Sign-up and ordering of books takes place on Wed., Oct. 7, 3:00-4:30 (discussion in the RAO, C level) or Thurs. Oct. 8, 3:00 -4:30 (ACR, C level).

Wed. or Thurs., Dec. 12 or 13, 3:00 - 4:30 (RAO, C level).

A full description and registration form will be distributed in cubbies on Mon. Sept. 10.

Get your reading glasses out and turn off your TV! These discussions can be fun and you'll learn something to boot.

Course on W.E. B. DuBois

DuBois.jpg

Another interesting and exciting course will soon be offered by Kendal's own Pulitzer Prize winner Bill McFeely. This one will be on the life of the great African American leader W.E.B. DuBois

W.E.B. DuBois was the author of The Souls of Black Folk, a 1903 “classic” which is more often saluted than read. Bill and those lucky enough to participate in his course will explore the essays and the history of this great man. The course will take place at 10:30 on four Fridays, September 28, October 5, 12, and 19, place to be announced. It will be limited to fifteen members. They will use the Dover edition ($5) so everyone will be on the same page.

Books are ordered and will be distributed to members before the first class. A course description will be placed in the Activities Alcove (opposite the Computer Room) on Sept. 17 and a sign-up sheet on Sept 20.

Get there quickly. Bill's courses fill up very rapidly.
